Both are forged from ball-peen hammer-heads and have hardened and tempered cutting edges while the remainder of the head remains soft.

In the instance of the spike hawk pictured, the customer wanted a handle with lots of figure.
I used some western maple and compensated for the weakness inherent in "wild grain" by laminating in a strip of purpleheart down the center.

This pipe-hawk is smokable.
The pommel is drilled down to the eye, with a bowl.
The hickory handle has been split, grooved then joined back together again. An ebony mouthpiece/fawn's-foot is pinned onto the end.
The handle/head connection is reinforced by a steel tube lining the neck from inside the eye to a few inches down the handle.
A wrapping of rawhide prevents splitting.
These were commissioned pieces but I continue to make them "on spec" as time permits.
Alternately, a similar hawk could be ordered for the same general cost - barring major changes.
That cost being:
$100 shipped for the spike hawk
$140 shipped for the pipe hawk
